ABS-CBN uplifts and enriches lives everywhere by achieving breakthroughs in the production of world-class entertainment, news and information programs and in the continuous use of technology to deliver these to its audiences not just in the Philippines, but globally.

From its humble beginnings operating a radio antenna from a mango tree in the early ‘50s, ABS-CBN has grown considerably and has constantly been at the forefront of innovation – from becoming the first to introduce television in the Philippines to being the first to deliver nationwide broadcasts via satellite. Supported by a network of 60 originating, relay and affiliate VHF and UHF TV stations and 18 radio stations across the country, ABS-CBN’s nationwide reach is still unmatched to this day.

Its flagship station, Channel 2 in Mega Manila, distributes ABS-CBN’s creative, leading edge and locally-produced content. Included in its library are hundreds of thousands of hours of high-rating TV programs of various genres, award-winning and critically-acclaimed in-house produced movies, chart-topping music hits and popular syndicated foreign programs. ABS-CBN also houses the most trusted and most credible news and current affairs group that empowers its viewers and upholds the Company’s mission of being in the service of the Filipino.

ABS-CBN’s AM and FM radio programs continue to lead the industry in listenership and innovation. DZMM became the first AM station to successfully break into cable TV with the launch of Teleradyo. DZMM and DWRR (FM-Manila) also made their presence felt online through live streaming.

ABS-CBN was also first to introduce pay TV services in the country, operating 9 cable channels distributed to cable homes by Sky Cable and its affiliates. ANC, the only local 24-hour cable news channel in the country, and Teleradyo, the only AM radio broadcast shown on TV, updates viewers with the latest news and current events. Its live coverages keep viewers glued to their TV sets as they watch history unfold before their eyes. The highest-rating cable channel in the country, Cinema One, offers total family entertainment by showcasing local blockbuster movies. The features of Lifestyle Network and Velvet fascinate upscale females, while the popular animes of Hero and the music videos of Myx keep the youth absorbed. The males get their daily fix of thrill and excitement through Maxxx and Balls. Today, ABS-CBN is leading the industry in bringing digital television to the Philippines, opening up even more opportunities for ABS-CBN to showcase its content.

The Filipino Channel (TFC), the first Filipino channel available abroad, continues to warm the hearts of overseas Filipinos through choice in-home entertainment and Philippine local news. Through TFC, ABS-CBN reaches more than 1.7 million viewers in 60 countries through cable, satellite/direct-to-home, Internet Protocol TeleVision (IPTV) and the Internet through TFC Now!

In the movie-making front, ABS-CBN’s movie production arm, Star Cinema, single-handedly revived the fledgling local movie industry with one blockbuster hit after another, often posting more than Php100 million in gross receipts – the local movie industry’s unofficial mark for blockbuster status. In fact, Star Cinema produced the first movie in Philippine cinema history to break the Php200 million gross receipts mark.

Star Records, ABS-CBN’s recording outfit for music, TV and movies, maintained its status as a major player in the industry, consistently besting other local outfits in garnering the most number of albums reaching Gold or Platinum sales status. Looking towards the future, Star Records’ properties are now available in digital formats.

To address the needs of the higher-end segments of the country, ABS-CBN offers 14 glossy magazine titles, serving various niche upscale interests, from fashion and lifestyle, celebrity and entertainment to culinary arts and interior design, as well as sports and male-specific interests.

Blazing the trail in new media technologies, ABS-CBN also invested in mobile and the Internet, offering various mobile and online services to its customers. TV interactivity was pioneered by ABS-CBN in the launching of TV text promos and TV polls / voting systems. Just recently, ABS-CBN’s interactive election campaign, Boto Mo, I-Patrol Mo, was recognized by various media, PR and other award-giving bodies here and abroad. ABS-CBN’s other online properties (entertainment and news sites, online games) have proven to be strongly patronized by the growing Filipino online community.

Further proof of ABS-CBN’s strength in both content production and distribution, it has successfully licensed its hot properties to foreign media outlets in Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa, attracting droves of foreign viewers and exposing them to the creativity of the Filipino. ABS-CBN will also lead the Asia expansion of Multiply, one of the largest and fastest growing internet-based social networks in the world.

Armed with first-rate content properties unsurpassed by any local media company and a multi-platform distribution network that is second to none, it is no wonder that the Wall Street Journal Asia 2007 Survey cited ABS-CBN as the most admired Filipino media company and No. 3 Filipino company in innovation.

    Map of the Philippines

Early History -The Negritos are believed to have migrated to the Philippines some 30,000 years ago from Borneo, Sumatra, and Malaya. The Malayans followed in successive waves. These people belonged to a primitive epoch of Malayan culture, which has apparently survived to this day among certain groups such as the Igorots. The Malayan tribes that came later had more highly developed material culturesIn the 14th cent. Arab traders from Malay and Borneo introduced Islam into the southern islands and extended their influence as far north as Luzon. The first Europeans to visit (1521) the Philippines were those in the Spanish expedition around the world led by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Other Spanish expeditions followed, including one from New Spain (Mexico) under López de Villalobos, who in 1542 named the islands for the infante Philip, later Philip II.

Spanish Control - The conquest of the Filipinos by Spain did not begin in earnest until 1564, when another expedition from New Spain, commanded by Miguel López de Legaspi, arrived. Spanish leadership was soon established over many small independent communities that previously had known no central rule. By 1571, when López de Legaspi established the Spanish city of Manila on the site of a Moro town he had conquered the year before, the Spanish foothold in the Philippines was secure, despite the opposition of the Portuguese, who were eager to maintain their monopoly on the trade of East Asia.

Manila repulsed the attack of the Chinese pirate Limahong in 1574. For centuries before the Spanish arrived the Chinese had traded with the Filipinos, but evidently none had settled permanently in the islands until after the conquest. Chinese trade and labor were of great importance in the early development of the Spanish colony, but the Chinese came to be feared and hated because of their increasing numbers, and in 1603 the Spanish murdered thousands of them (later, there were lesser massacres of the Chinese).

The Spanish governor, made a viceroy in 1589, ruled with the advice of the powerful royal audiencia. There were frequent uprisings by the Filipinos, who resented the encomienda system. By the end of the 16th cent. Manila had become a leading commercial center of East Asia, carrying on a flourishing trade with China, India, and the East Indies. The Philippines supplied some wealth (including gold) to Spain, and the richly laden galleons plying between the islands and New Spain were often attacked by English freebooters. There was also trouble from other quarters, and the period from 1600 to 1663 was marked by continual wars with the Dutch, who were laying the foundations of their rich empire in the East Indies, and with Moro pirates. One of the most difficult problems the Spanish faced was the subjugation of the Moros. Intermittent campaigns were conducted against them but without conclusive results until the middle of the 19th cent. As the power of the Spanish Empire waned, the Jesuit orders became more influential in the Philippines and acquired great amounts of property.
